Course Outline and Assessment Details

Summary

The proposed course will introduce participants to the fundamentals of social therapeutic method. The key objectives and elements of the practice will be discussed, including: human development and group creativity; the enhancement of sociality and engagement of alienation; the unique creativity and power of the group; how to relate to the group as the unit of development; the importance of group heterogeneity; and the therapy group as a performance ensemble. In addition, the social therapeutic critique—as one of numerous postmodern critiques—of mainstream psychology and its history will be covered. Finally, the contributions of Marx, Vygotsky and Wittgenstein to social therapy will be studied.

Format

We desire to create conversation and develop this course with you. The structure laid out below includes questions for each topic; no doubt once we begin these will be modified and added to. We have left the specifics of formal assignments blank because we want them to emerge out of what we create together so that they will be maximally meaningful to you and to us.
